Can't sleep.....part 2
Their cheeks are dusted with freckles, which I distinctly remember asking God to spare them from. Their hair is stringy and hardly ever brushed, although when we take the time to fix it up, it's beautifully straight. Two brunettes and a blonde. They smell like candy and dirty socks. They only brush their teeth when forced to and even then must be closely watched for honesty. They eat pickled okra right out of the jar. Maybe because I lived on it while I was pregnant. Maybe because they are weird. I leave notes in their lunches which they think is cool but may not much longer. They fight over who has to take a shower first and who fed the dog last. They can be best friends or worst enemies, just depends on the hour. They think farting noises are funny, but I'll give them that one since their dad still thinks so too. When they achieve something they've worked for, whether it be making a new friend, straight A's on a report card, or even going potty on the toilet, they all have the same smile afterwards, and I always have to take a moment to choke down the lump that comes up in my throat. Two out of three are calm and rational. They make good choices. They are kind and patient. One is fiesty and strong willed. She doesn't take "no" for an answer. That may be awesome later in life, right now.......not so much. But they all say I'm their best friend and they hug me tight when I'm sad. They worry about me and thank me when I've worked hard for them. They always kiss me goodnight and can never stay mad at me. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be teaching them, but I know they know how to love another human being and that just might be the only thing people need to learn nowadays.
